Here are some of the things we enjoyed on Oahu:
Dole Pineapple plantation - about a 30 minute drive. It covers the pretty interesting history of Dole and then you get a cool train ride through the plantation. You can walk the corn Maze. It's the largest in the world. We played a game to see who could get out of there first. And at the end you get some really yummy fresh pineapple.
See North Shore beaches and surfers (45 minute drive). This is not a beach or surfing for regular people. The waves are quite strong and high. But watching the surfers is great. You'll never get views of surfers riding waves like that anywhere else in the US. Some great non-chain eateries in the area. People just taking it slow and enjoying life.
Pearl Harbor (30 minutes) - Every American should see this. You'll board the USS Arizona and take a fantastic tour. You'll learn a lot about the rich history of the navy on that island and of course the fateful day of Pearl Harbor. Don't get too bogged down in the facts. Just enjoy what you are seeing. Think about the sacrifices these brave Americans made for us.
Waikiki - Right off the main street Kalakawee (sp?)this is a beautiful beach with a grand entrance. It's quite busy and lots to see. You'll see the statue of Duke with his Leis on. The beach is very safe with police protection everywhere. Grab some Shave Ice for the kids (and you) and rent some boogie boards and have a blast. Go across the street and grab some sandwiches at Wolfgang's and watch the absolutely amazing sunset of Waikiki. I love the colors. No picture will do it justice but try to capture it in your mind so you can take it back with you to the mainland. Mahalo!
